Montana is ranked as the 5th windiest state in the country, and by far one of the least developed in respect to wind generation. In many areas wind can average over 10 mph annually making it suitable for Wind generation. This Map of Montana shows some of the annual average wind speeds.

Obviously wind is not for everyone; however there are many people in Montana and the northwest that can benefit from wind generation. Check with you local covenants to make sure you can have wind generators, and then find out what your annual average wind speeds are. If over 10 mph, you are a good candidate for grid tie wind, and if you are over 9 mph stand-alone wind generation will do well.
